Frenchman Jean-Yves Blondeau first conceived of his plastic Buggy Rollin' suit in 1994, while he was a student at Olivier de Serres design school, in Paris. But the invention, which allows a wearer to top 60 miles per hour while maintaining any position found in the Kama Sutra, didn't exactly catch fire with consumers. Not one to give up, Blondeau recently refined the suit to a stripped-down 31-wheel version and developed his own playbook of moves, like the Zaphial (rolling flat on your back with all four limbs pointed straight up) and the Smooth Buggy Dog (three limbs on the ground and one rolling along a wall).
Google Tech Talks October 30, 2008 ABSTRACT Coreboot, formerly known as LinuxBIOS, was originally started in 1999 to complement LOBOS [2] (Linux OS Boots OS) as part of an effort to move away from inscrutible and inflexible proprietary BIOS firmware used in clusters at high-security government research labs. However, coreboot took on a life of its own and quickly overcame many obstacles thanks to the help of a friendly and knowledgable open source community. This talk will give an overview of coreboot, what it is capable of, what it is incapable of, and what makes it different from the traditional PC BIOS and EFI. We'll focus on developments in version 3 which cleans up the development model substantially, has much improved ACPI and SMI support, usage of the Linux kernel build system to build coreboot, new ways to boot locally and over a network, do some demos, and more! Speaker: Ronald G. Minnich Ron Minnich founded the LinuxBIOS project (which is now Coreboot) when he joined the Cluster Research Team at Los Alamos Nat'l Lab in 1999. He has been working in HPC for much longer than he ever expected to, which explains the grey hairs in his beard. He has built software and HPC systems based on FPGAs, PIMs, distributed computers (co-authoring a famous C song: "I was Grid before Grid was cool"), and clusters. He has been working with Unix innards longer than some of his co-workers have been alive, which fact causes him to wonder if he should get in another line of work. Ron is also a contributor to Linux (v9fs), Plan 9, has written articles for numerous publications (DDJ, Linux Journal, etc) and has authored and co-authored over 20 papers [4] covering everything from distributed computing, shared memory models, firmware (Coreboot), large-scale fault tolerant computing, and much more. Stefan eventually founded Coresystems GmbH which focused on providing firmware solutions centered around Open Firmware and Coreboot and has since assumed stewardship of the project.

Mark Felt, the man better known as Deep Throat has died at the age of 95. Felt died at his home in Calif. From congestive heart failure. Felt's information, given to two Washington Post reporters, helped bring down the Nixon administration. (Dec. 19)

Ge Jin, PhD candidate in Communication at UCSD, is researching areas of the computer gaming culture in China, real money trade in online games and documentary filmmaking. In China, a new kind of factory hires people to play online games like World of Warcraft and Lineage and produce in-game currency, equipment, high-level characters and other virtual goods. Affluent gamers from Korea, Europe and America pay real money for these virtual goods to quickly raise their status in games. Jin's research takes a close look at how these factories, commonly known as "gold farms", organize the production and distribution of virtual goods.

The classic dancing scene from Jean-Luc Goddard's crime comedy Bande a Part. It so impressed Quentin Tarantino that he named his movie production company, "A Band Apart", after the film and referenced it in Pulp Fiction. Goddard later said that he would much rather Tarantino had just given him a lot of money instead. Bande a Part was released in the US as Band of Outsiders.
When I heard that Eddy Vedder had remade this Canadian Classic by Gordon Peterson,(for the new film "Into the Wild") I was thrilled to see this cool song get some more much deserved public attention. So I was inspired to make a quick video with the original song. Please don't misunderstand anyone. I am deeply influenced by Pearl Jam. I almost thought the whole grunge scene was gonna turn into another big social movement like the 60's. I'd like to hear more original music by Pearl Jam. Anyways, this was simply one of the best songs I've heard in the last 20 years. As soon as I heard it on the radio, I ran out and bought the Album. Several of my closest Artistic friends all agreed about how special and significant this artist creation was and we couldn't believe how relatively unknown it was by the general public. But then again, isn't that the way of the Soul: "Mostly unknown, misunderstood or forgotten by the many, and praised and appreciated by the few!" In short, the faithful few of us would love to hear more from Gordon Peterson and the world needs him too.
